Workplace Discrimination

1.     What is Workplace Discrimination?

The term "discrimination" may be familiar to you. But do you really understand what it means? Do you know how it applies to your profession?

Discrimination in the workplace occurs when an individual or a group of individuals is treated unfairly or unequally based on certain qualities. Race, ethnicity, gender identity, age, disability, sexual orientation, religious views, and national origin are all protected traits. Discrimination in the workplace can occur among coworkers, job candidates, or employees and their bosses. Discrimination is illegal regardless of whether it is done on purpose or by mistake (Campbell, Allaya Cooks;, 2021).

2.     Different Types of Workplace Discrimination

Workplace discrimination occurs when an employee is treated unfairly for a variety of reasons. Employees and younger workers might be discriminated against for a variety of reasons, including their relationship to another person. An employer, for example, cannot refuse to hire a job candidate because their spouse is disabled and they are concerned that the candidate's caring responsibilities may interfere with their job. Even though the candidate is not the disabled party, this would be discrimination under the ADA (Doyle, Alison;, 2020).

 1.1 Examples of Workplace Discrimination

                                                  1.1.1      Race

It is against the law to harass or discriminate against someone because of their race or color. If broader company practices have a harmful impact on individuals of a certain race or color and are not required for business operations, they may be illegal (Butler, Pearson;, 2020).

                                                  1.1.2      Sex

Sex discrimination occurs when an employee or applicant is treated unfairly because of their gender. Discrimination based on sexual orientation is also banned, in addition to discrimination based on biological sex (Butler, Pearson;, 2020).

                                                  1.1.3      Age

Age discrimination occurs when an employee or applicant is treated unfairly due to their age. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act prohibits employers from discriminating against anyone over the age of 40 (Butler, Pearson;, 2020).

                                                  1.1.4      Religion

It is against the law to harass or discriminate against an employee because of their religion, practices, or moral convictions. These rules safeguard those who follow religion, as well as those who are married to or otherwise linked with religious people (Butler, Pearson;, 2020)

                                                  1.1.5      Disability

When an employer covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act treats a disabled employee or applicant unfairly, this is known as disability discrimination (Butler, Pearson;, 2020).

3.     Conclusion

Human Resource managers may be able to better create and implement diversity training programs, as well as councils, networks, and mentoring programs for minority employees, by studying the elements that influence their perceptions of discrimination.
